Secure container uses in EVE Online

Secure containers in EVE Online are versatile items that serve multiple functions across the vast universe of New Eden. These containers come in various sizes and types, each designed for specific purposes. Understanding how to effectively use secure containers can enhance your gameplay, whether you’re a miner, explorer, industrialist, or PvP enthusiast. Here are the primary uses for secure containers:

1. Inventory Management and Expansion:

  • Station Storage: Secure containers can be used within stations to organize inventory. Different container sizes help sort items based on category, purpose, or any other personal system, making inventory management more efficient.
  • Ship Cargo Hold Expansion: While secure containers don’t technically increase cargo hold capacity, using them in your ship’s cargo hold can help organize loot, modules, and other items during missions, exploration, or mining operations.

2. Enhancing Mining Operations:

  • Jetcan Mining: Miners can eject a secure container into space to temporarily store ore when their ship’s cargo hold is full. This practice, known as «jetcan mining,» allows miners to continue collecting ore without having to dock and unload frequently. However, be aware that jettisoned containers are accessible to other players, posing a risk of theft.
  • Mobile Depots: Though not technically the same as traditional secure containers, Mobile Depots offer secure storage in space and can be used by miners in remote areas to safely store ore or ice until it can be transported back to a station.

3. Safe Spot Creation:

  • Players can create «safe spots» in space by deploying secure containers in locations away from standard warp points. These spots can be used to safely log off in space, hide from pursuers, or as staging points for PvP ambushes. Containers used in this way often serve as bookmarks, making the safe spot easier to find.

4. Bookmark Sharing and Storage:

  • Before the introduction of shared bookmark folders, secure containers were a common method for corporations and alliances to share bookmarks with members. Containers placed at strategic locations could hold physical bookmark items for important locations. While less common now due to changes in bookmark sharing, this can still be used in certain scenarios.

5. Sneakier PvP and Espionage Tactics:

  • Baiting: Some players use secure containers as bait, placing them in busy areas or at strategic points to lure in potential targets for PvP encounters.
  • Smuggling: Secure containers with password protection can be used to safely transport sensitive or valuable items, including contraband or espionage materials, through dangerous or monitored areas.

6. Exploration and Treasure Hunts:

  • Secure containers can be placed in hidden locations as part of player-organized treasure hunts or exploration challenges, containing clues, items, or rewards for other players to find.

Considerations When Using Secure Containers:

  • Theft Risk: Unanchored containers in space can be scanned down and accessed by other players. Use caution when storing valuable items in jettisoned containers.
  • Decay: Unanchored containers in space (except for Mobile Depots and specialized structures like Small Secure Containers and Giant Secure Containers that can be anchored) will eventually disappear, along with their contents. Be mindful of the timers and limitations associated with each type.

Secure containers in EVE Online offer players a range of strategic and organizational benefits. From enhancing mining operations to creating intricate PvP setups, these containers are a valuable tool in the arsenal of any EVE Online player, showcasing the game’s depth and the creative opportunities it provides.
