EVE Online system security levels explained

EVE Online’s universe, known as New Eden, is divided into thousands of star systems, each with a specific security level that influences the rules of engagement, the presence of NPC law enforcement (CONCORD), and the types of activities players might encounter. Understanding system security levels is crucial for navigating the game safely and effectively. Here’s a breakdown of the security status system in EVE Online:

High Security Space (Highsec)

  • Security Status: 1.0 to 0.5
  • Characteristics:
    • CONCORD is present and will respond to illegal aggression between players by destroying the aggressor’s ship.
    • The speed of CONCORD’s response varies with the security level—faster in 1.0 and gradually slower towards 0.5.
    • Many highsec activities include mission running, trading, mining, and manufacturing.
  • Key Points:
    • Despite the relative safety, players can still be attacked (suicide ganking) but attackers will lose their ships to CONCORD.
    • The presence of Faction Police in certain areas can affect players with low security status or poor standings with the controlling faction.

Low Security Space (Lowsec)

  • Security Status: 0.4 to 0.1
  • Characteristics:
    • CONCORD does not operate in lowsec; however, gate and station guns will fire at aggressors who engage in unauthorized PvP.
    • Players can engage in PvP without CONCORD intervention but will incur security status penalties and become suspect, making them a target for other players without penalty.
    • Activities in lowsec include piracy, faction warfare, and more lucrative mining and exploration compared to highsec.
  • Key Points:
    • The risk of PvP encounters is significantly higher. Traveling through or living in lowsec requires caution and preparation.
    • Gate and station guns provide some deterrent to aggression but are not a guaranteed protection.

Null Security Space (Nullsec)

  • Security Status: 0.0 (including -0.1 to -1.0, often referred to as «true» nullsec)
  • Characteristics:
    • No CONCORD presence, and no gate or station guns. Players can freely engage in PvP without direct NPC intervention.
    • Systems can be claimed and controlled by player alliances, who can enforce their own rules, tax rates, and deploy defense structures.
    • Nullsec is home to the richest resources and most profitable activities in the game but comes with high risk.
  • Key Points:
    • Understanding local politics and alliances is crucial for survival and success.
    • Players often rely on corporation or alliance networks for security and logistics.

Wormhole Space (J-Space)

  • Security Status: Unrated
  • Characteristics:
    • No CONCORD presence and unique mechanics such as no local chat, making it impossible to see who else is in the system without being on grid.
    • Systems vary in class from C1 to C6, with C6 being the most difficult and rewarding.
    • Wormhole space is rich in resources like sleeper sites and gas clouds but is extremely dangerous due to the unpredictability of encounters.
  • Key Points:
    • Navigation is challenging, as wormholes connecting systems can collapse or lead to unexpected parts of space.
    • Stealth and surprise are common tactics, with cloaked ships being a constant threat.

Navigating the different security levels of EVE Online requires a mix of knowledge, preparation, and caution. Each type of space offers unique opportunities and challenges, shaping the activities and dynamics of New Eden’s diverse player base. Whether engaging in peaceful commerce, exploring the unknown, or waging war, understanding the security status of systems is essential for carving out your path in the universe.
