EVE Online low sec gate camps

EVE Online low sec gate camps

Low sec (low security) gate camps in EVE Online are a common hazard, especially in systems that serve as chokepoints between different regions or lead to valuable resources or mission hubs. These gate camps are typically set up by groups of players aiming to intercept and destroy or ransom other players’ ships for profit. Surviving and navigating through low sec gate camps requires a mix of preparation, knowledge, and sometimes sheer luck. Here’s a guide to help you deal with low sec gate camps:

Understanding Gate Camp Mechanics

  1. Smartbombs: Some gate camps use ships equipped with smartbombs capable of dealing area-of-effect damage to destroy small ships quickly. Keeping at range is crucial to avoid these.
  2. Interceptors and Fast Attack Ships: Often used to «tackle» or pin down targets quickly, making it hard to escape once you’re caught.
  3. Sensor Boosted Ships: Ships equipped with sensor boosters can lock targets very quickly, often before they can warp away, even if they’re not immediately tackled.
  4. Cloak and Warp Trick: Some gate camps watch for the use of the cloak and MWD (Microwarpdrive) trick by cloaky ships and may try to decloak them by guessing their trajectory.

Preparing for Gate Camps

  1. Ship Choice: Use ships that are hard to catch, such as interceptors, which are immune to non-targeted warp disruption (interdiction). Cloaky ships, like Covert Ops frigates or recon ships equipped with Covert Ops Cloaking Devices, also offer a higher chance of slipping through unnoticed.
  2. Fit for Survival: Include warp core stabilizers if your ship can afford to sacrifice the fitting slots, as these can help you escape from warp disruptors and scramblers. However, note that this won’t help against heavy interdictors.
  3. Scout Ahead: Use an alt character or a corpmate to scout the gate from the other side before jumping through. Alternatively, employ combat probes to scan the gate area if you’re in an adjacent system.

Navigating Gate Camps

  1. Jump Cloak: When you jump through a gate, you have a few seconds of cloak provided by the game. Use this time to assess the situation. Don’t move until you’ve decided on a course of action.
  2. Avoiding Smartbombs: If you suspect a smartbomb trap, warp to a celestial or safe spot at range from the gate, then warp directly to the gate at zero to minimize your time in smartbomb range.
  3. The Cloak + MWD Trick: For ships that can fit them, this trick involves immediately activating a cloaking device and a MWD upon decloaking. This makes you hard to target and boosts your speed, helping to get out of range or align to warp out.
  4. Bouncing: If landing in a gate camp from one gate and needing to escape, don’t warp directly to another gate, as the camp might have scouts or fast ships ready to intercept you at the next gate. Instead, warp to a celestial body or create safe spots in the system to «bounce» between, making your movements unpredictable.
  5. Emergency Measures: If caught, assess whether fighting, negotiating, or attempting to escape is the best option based on your ship’s capabilities and the camp’s composition. Sometimes, ejecting valuable cargo can distract pirates long enough to escape.

Utilizing Intel and Communication

  1. Intel Channels: Join player-run intel channels where reports of gate camps are shared. This can give you advance warning of dangers in your route.
  2. Local Chat: Pay attention to the local chat for potential threats or talks regarding gate camps.

Surviving low sec gate camps in EVE Online requires caution, preparation, and a good understanding of game mechanics and player behaviors. By applying these strategies, you can increase your chances of safely navigating through low security space.
