Terraria NPC trading

Trading with NPCs in Terraria is an essential part of the game, providing players access to a wide range of items, from basic supplies and tools to unique weapons and accessories. Each NPC has a specific set of items they sell, which can expand or change based on certain game conditions such as time of day, events, or player progression. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how NPC trading works, how to optimize your interactions, and what key items you might want to look out for.

Basics of NPC Trading

  1. Accessing NPC Inventory: To trade with an NPC, you simply need to right-click on them when they are nearby. This will open a dialogue box with a «Shop» option, which displays their inventory of items for sale.
  2. Buying Items: Items can be purchased using coins, which are obtained by defeating enemies, selling items, or finding them in the world. Place the coins in your inventory and click on the item you want to buy from the NPC’s shop to purchase it.
  3. Selling Items: You can sell unwanted items to any NPC with a shop by opening the trading interface and placing items from your inventory into the shop screen. The NPC will offer you coins based on the item’s value.

Optimizing NPC Trading

  1. NPC Happiness: As of the 1.4 update, NPCs have happiness levels that affect their prices. Keeping an NPC happy by housing them in their preferred biome and near preferred neighbors can lower purchase prices and increase the selling price of items.
    • For example, the Guide prefers the Forest biome and likes being near the Clothier.
  2. Strategic Housing: Build NPC houses in biomes that offer strategic advantages. For example, placing the Witch Doctor in the Jungle biome will unlock additional items like the Leaf Wings at night.
  3. Unlocking Additional Goods: Some NPCs will sell additional items under specific conditions:
    • Arms Dealer: Will sell the Minishark only at night or during a Blood Moon.
    • Painter: Offers different paintings depending on the biome he is currently in.
    • Party Girl: Sells the Slime Gun only during a Party.

Key Items from NPCs

  • Merchant: An early-game NPC who sells useful items like the Mining Helmet for underground exploration.
  • Demolitionist: Essential for buying explosives like Bombs and Dynamite, crucial for efficient mining and resource gathering.
  • Dryad: Sells seeds, the Dirt Rod, and the Purification Powder which are useful for gardening and combating corruption or crimson.
  • Goblin Tinkerer: Offers the Tinkerer’s Workshop, where you can combine certain items to enhance their abilities. Also sells the Rocket Boots and reforges items to get better modifiers.
  • Mechanic: Sells mechanisms and wires which are critical for creating traps and automated farms.
  • Wizard: Available in Hardmode, sells magical items and spell tomes which are extremely useful for magic users.

Event and Time-Specific NPCs

  • Santa Claus: Available during the Christmas season (December 15th — 31st), sells festive decorations and items.
  • Travelling Merchant: Randomly visits with a variety of unique and often powerful items not available from other NPCs.

By strategically managing your interactions and purchases with NPCs, you can significantly enhance your efficiency and capability in Terraria. Understanding the preferences and offerings of each NPC will allow you to plan your base layout and spending to maximize benefits and access crucial items for your adventure.
