Dota 2 support hero positioning

Dota 2 support hero positioning

Positioning as a support hero in Dota 2 is both an art and a science, critical for surviving team fights, securing objectives, and effectively aiding your team. The right positioning can enable you to maximize your abilities’ impact, ward effectively, and save allies or disrupt enemies. Here’s a guide to mastering support positioning:

During Laning Phase

  • Harassment Positioning: Stay out of the enemy’s line of sight, using fog of war and terrain to your advantage. Position yourself to harass the enemy offlaner without drawing too much creep aggro or putting yourself in danger.
  • Pulling and Stacking: Learn the timing and positioning for pulling neutral creeps to your lane creeps, controlling the lane equilibrium. Properly stacking neutral camps requires being at the right place at the right moment, typically :53 or :55 seconds past the minute, depending on the camp.
  • Safeguarding Your Carry: Position yourself between the enemy and your carry when they are vulnerable, ready to use your disables or save abilities. Be mindful not to be too aggressive, risking your life unnecessarily.

Mid-Game and Roaming

  • Ganking: When moving around the map to gank, use smoke of deceit to avoid common ward spots. Move through the trees and high ground to surprise your enemies.
  • Warding and Dewarding: Always approach warding spots with caution. Understand common ward locations and think about less predictable spots that still offer valuable vision. Dewarding often requires you to be in dangerous territory, so assess the risk before attempting.

Team Fights

  • Backline Positioning: As a support, you generally want to stay on the outskirts of fights, casting your spells from a safe distance. Your goal is to survive as long as possible to use your spells multiple times in a fight.
  • Saving Abilities: If you have abilities that can save teammates (such as Shadow Demon’s Disruption or Oracle’s False Promise), position yourself where you can quickly respond to enemies initiating on your cores.
  • Initiation and Counter-Initiation: Some supports are great at initiating (e.g., Earthshaker) or counter-initiating (e.g., Silencer). Position yourself to utilize these strengths without being the first target of enemy aggression.

High Ground Defense

  • Utilize Vision: Fighting on high ground gives you a vision advantage. Use it to position yourself where you can see the enemy approaching but they can’t see you.
  • Choke Points: Use the narrow paths leading into your base to your advantage, placing AoE (Area of Effect) spells or items effectively.

General Positioning Tips

  • Map Awareness: Constantly check the minimap to assess where enemies are or could be. Missing heroes often signal ganks or rotations.
  • Understand Your Role in Each Fight: Your positioning may vary depending on your hero’s capabilities and the state of the game. Know whether you need to be more protective of your team or more aggressive in disabling the enemy.
  • Learn from Mistakes: Review your deaths in replays to see if poor positioning was a factor. Note how different positioning could have changed the outcome.

Good positioning for a support is dynamic and situational, heavily influenced by the flow of the game, the heroes involved, and the objectives at hand. Developing a keen sense of positioning takes practice and experience but is crucial for excelling as a support player in Dota 2.
